What does the check engine light mean?

On an OBD-II vehicle, a check-engine light that stays on after startup or comes on while the engine is running signals a detected emissions-related fault. The warning alone does not identify a failed part. A brief light during startup can be a normal check; when it appears matters.1,2

At startup

The 2014 Ford C-MAX manual describes its “service engine soon” lamp illuminating before the engine starts as a bulb check. It also describes a separate startup flashing pattern for emissions-readiness status.1

Those indications differ from a warning while the engine is running. Check your vehicle's manual for its particular light and startup sequence; the Ford example does not apply to every vehicle.

A steady light

Arrange diagnosis of a light that remains on while the engine is running, even if the car feels normal. Nevada DMV advises seeking service when the light stays lit.2 A steady light alone is not enough information to decide whether continued driving is appropriate.

Check your owner's manual and tell the repair technician when the warning appeared and any symptoms you noticed. You do not need to buy a scanner before seeking help.

A flashing light

Treat a flashing check-engine light while the engine is running as urgent. The Ford manual associates this with misfire and warns of possible catalytic-converter damage; Nevada DMV advises stopping driving and getting the vehicle to a shop.1,2

Follow your vehicle's warning instructions and seek qualified assistance promptly. If you cannot determine what those instructions require, contact roadside assistance or a qualified technician for guidance rather than assume continued driving is safe.

What a code can tell you

A compatible scanner can retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and available supporting data. A code describes a detected condition; it does not, by itself, prove which part needs replacing. The Innova 5210 manual directs users to the vehicle's diagnostic procedures rather than replacing a part from its code definition alone.3

Why clearing the light is not a repair

Erasing codes does not repair the underlying fault. It can also remove information useful to a technician: the Innova manual warns that its erase function deletes freeze-frame data, while permanent codes are not erased.2,3

Clearing codes or disconnecting the battery can reset non-continuous emissions monitors to “Not Ready,” as Texas DPS explains.4 A light that has gone out is therefore not proof of either a completed repair or readiness for an emissions test. See our emissions-readiness explanation.
