Amazon deal types explained: Lightning Deals, coupons, Subscribe & Save and more

Amazon runs several kinds of deal, and each has its own rules. Lightning Deals are timed and limited in quantity, coupons must be clipped, Subscribe & Save trades a repeat order for a discount, and Prime-exclusive deals need membership. Resale and Renewed items are used or refurbished.

The types at a glance

The labels on Amazon's Today's Deals page overlap, and Amazon changes names and rules from time to time. This table sums up each type; the sections below give the detail and say where Amazon publishes no figure.

Lightning Deals

A Lightning Deal is a discount that is limited both in time and in quantity. Amazon says one is available “one per customer, until the offer ends or all deals are claimed”, and a listing shows the price, a bar for the percentage claimed and a timer.1 Amazon's seller guide says a Lightning Deal can run from 4 to 12 hours, as Amazon decides.3 Amazon does not publish how many units a given deal holds, so the claimed bar is the only guide to what is left.

Adding the item to your cart claims it, and the item then stays at the deal price in your cart for 15 minutes. You must also finish before the offer itself ends. If a deal is fully claimed, a waitlist may be offered, but Amazon notes that joining one does not mean you will get the deal. The claim and the purchase must be made from the same account, and if you cancel you cannot reorder the same deal for 30 minutes.1

Prime membership matters in two ways. Amazon's Prime benefits page lists 30-minute early access to Lightning Deals, and Amazon's Lightning Deal page says that during Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days they are exclusive to Prime members.1,2 Browse the current set on our Amazon Lightning Deals page.

Deal of the Day and other limited-time deals

“Deal of the Day” is the name of a featured daily deal on Amazon's Today's Deals page. Coverage of Amazon's deal lineup has long listed it beside Lightning Deals, coupons and Prime Early Access deals.10 We found no Amazon shopper help page that defines it, so we do not state how long one lasts or how the pick is made. Read the timer or end date on the listing itself.

A related type is the “Best Deal”. Amazon's seller guide says a Best Deal “can run for a select number of days” and, like a Lightning Deal, applies without a code.3 Product listings often carry a badge such as “Limited time deal” for these. The label can mean a window of hours or of days, so the badge alone does not tell you how long the price will last. Our best Amazon deals and Amazon clearance pages collect current discounts of different depths.

Coupons

Amazon describes coupons as a percentage or a fixed amount off a single product or a set of products. They appear on the product page, where a shopper can clip them or enter a code at checkout. Sellers fund them, and Amazon says all coupons expire after 90 days, so a coupon is a seller promotion rather than an Amazon markdown.3

The practical rule is to clip first, then check out. A clipped coupon may not show in the cart, so confirm the reduction in the order summary on the final review screen. Coupons differ in eligibility and end dates, so read the terms next to the clip button.

Subscribe & Save

Subscribe & Save gives a discount on an eligible item in exchange for scheduled repeat deliveries, which suits things you reuse, such as household basics or pet supplies. Amazon's help page says the discount shows on the product page when you sign up and can change at any time. It adds that five subscriptions in one delivery to a single address unlock extra savings, that the price will never be higher than the one in your reminder email, and that you can cancel at any time.4

Amazon's customer help page gives no single percentage. A seller-facing Amazon article says customers can save up to 15 percent, with the base amount depending on how the seller funds the discount and an extra 5 percent for five or more items in one delivery.5 Treat any fixed figure you read elsewhere as a snapshot and use the one on the product page. A recurring order is an ongoing commitment, so check the delivery schedule before you confirm it. Browse household-type deals in our Home & Garden and Beauty & Health categories.

Prime-exclusive deals

Amazon's Prime benefits page describes Prime Exclusive Deals as “deals every day on thousands of items available only to Prime members”.2 Without an active membership you cannot get the deal price. The product page shows the requirement next to the price. Prime members may also see extra savings during events such as Prime Day, and some Lightning Deals are limited to members then.1,2 Our Amazon Prime deals page lists current deals that Amazon marks as for Prime members only.

Amazon Resale and Amazon Renewed

These two programs are easy to confuse because both sell previously owned goods at lower prices. They work differently.

Amazon Resale is the current name for the store formerly called Warehouse Deals. It sells customer returns, open-box items and warehouse-damaged goods. Amazon says trained associates inspect each item for functionality, cosmetic damage, accessories and packaging, then assign one of four conditions: Used-Like New, Used-Very Good, Used-Good or Used-Acceptable.6 Amazon's general guidelines describe Like New as working perfectly and Acceptable as fairly worn but still working, and they say packaging or accessories may be missing in the lower grades.7 According to Amazon, an item that does not match its listed condition can be returned within 30 days, while “Used - Acceptable (Final Sale)” items are non-returnable.6 See our Amazon Resale deals and open box deals pages.

Amazon Renewed is Amazon's store for refurbished products. Amazon says a third-party company inspects and tests each item.9 The Renewed Guarantee gives most items a 90-day return period and Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items 365 days. Select items instead have a 30-day return period followed by an 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion. Accidental damage and misuse are not covered, and a device must be reset and cleared of personal data before it goes back.8 Check which terms apply on the product page before you order.

Checking a deal before you buy

  • Read the final price. The order summary shows what you pay after a coupon, a Subscribe & Save discount or a deal price.
  • Note the end condition. A Lightning Deal ends on time or when claimed. A coupon ends on its own date. A Renewed or Resale offer may be a single unit.
  • Check who qualifies. Prime-only prices need a membership. Shipping terms can differ for non-members.
  • Do the math. Use our discount calculator to turn a list price and a sale price into a percentage and a saving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Lightning Deal and a coupon?
A Lightning Deal is a timed, limited-quantity discount that Amazon schedules, and it can sell out before the timer ends. A coupon is a seller-funded discount you clip on the product page and that applies at checkout. Coupons are not tied to a countdown or a claimed percentage in the same way.
Do I need Prime to get Amazon deals?
Not for most of them. Prime-exclusive deals and some Lightning Deals during Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days require a membership, and Prime members can get early access to some Lightning Deals. Coupons, Subscribe & Save and Amazon Resale items are generally open to non-members, with shipping terms that can differ.
How much does Subscribe & Save take off?
It varies by product. Amazon's customer help page says the discount appears on the product page and can change at any time, and that five subscriptions in one delivery unlock extra savings. Amazon's seller-facing material describes savings of up to 15 percent, but read the figure on the product page, not a general number.
What is the difference between Amazon Resale and Amazon Renewed?
Amazon Resale sells returned, open-box and used items graded Like New, Very Good, Good or Acceptable. Amazon Renewed sells refurbished products under the Renewed Guarantee, which gives most items a 90-day return period. They are separate programs with different return terms.
Is Amazon Warehouse the same as Amazon Resale?
Yes. Amazon Resale is the current name for the store formerly called Amazon Warehouse.
