Gift Ideas for Car Lovers and DIYers

How to pick a gift for a car or tool enthusiast

The best gifts for people who work on cars or around the house are consumable or universal: a good set of microfiber towels, a tire pressure gauge, a magnetic parts tray, a work light, a multi-bit screwdriver. These fit nearly any vehicle or workbench, so they avoid the guesswork of buying a tool someone already owns in a different brand.

For anything vehicle specific, such as wipers, floor mats or sensors, confirm the fit before you buy. Amazon's product pages often show a fitment checker for the make, model and year, and the recipient will usually tell you their car if you ask casually. For power tools, check the battery system, because a tool that does not share batteries with the owner's set is less useful.

Before you buy

• Pick universal items when you do not know the vehicle or the tool brand.
• Use the fitment checker on the product page for anything car specific.
• Check the battery platform for cordless tools.
• Look at the return eligibility, since some automotive parts have limits once opened or installed.

Return windows and conditions vary by item, seller and season, so read the return eligibility on the product page before you buy, and use the gift option at checkout so the package does not show prices. Amazon's Help Center explains the current returns policy and how gift receipts work.
