Toys are usually bought for someone else, often against a date. That makes two things matter more than the discount: whether the item suits the child it is for, and whether it arrives complete and on time. Both are answerable from the product page, and the age guidance in particular is a safety notice rather than a suggestion.
Manufacturers print age guidance on the packaging and repeat it in the listing, and it reflects small parts, complexity, and how the toy is meant to be handled. Match it to the child's actual age, and to the younger siblings who will be in the same room. A set rated for older children does not become suitable because it is discounted.
Above the minimum, developmental stage decides whether a toy gets played with. Building sets have piece counts and difficulty ratings, board games list a player count and a typical play time, and all of it is on the page. Reading it is what separates a toy that lasts from one that stalls after an afternoon.
New items sold through official retailer listings should be factory sealed and complete. Where a listing states open-box or used condition, read the description for anything noted about missing pieces or packaging, because for board games and building sets a missing component can make the item unusable.
Check the contents list against what you expect. Bundles, starter sets, and expansions share very similar names, and an expansion is not playable without the base game it extends.
Electronic toys list their battery requirement in the specifications, including whether batteries are included and whether the pack is rechargeable or replaceable. Buy the batteries with the toy where they are not in the box. Anything that pairs with an app also lists device and operating system requirements, which are worth checking against the tablet or phone the child will actually use.
Look for consumables and add-ons too. Craft kits, printing toys, and anything that fires projectiles run out of the thing that makes them fun, and the refill is usually a separate purchase. The listing names what is included, and the reviews are where buyers say how long the supplied amount lasted.
Discounts on toys tend to deepen around major shopping holidays and in the stretch just after big gift-giving seasons, when retailers clear seasonal stock. If a toy is for a specific date, look at the delivery estimate as carefully as the price, and order early enough to allow for an exchange if the item is wrong.
Check the return window against the gap between delivery and the occasion. A gift bought well ahead can fall outside the standard window by the time it is opened, and knowing that in advance is easier than discovering it afterward. Prices and availability are set by the retailer and can change without notice.
