Clothing is the category where a discount most often ends in a return, and almost always for the same reason: the size was chosen from habit rather than from the chart on the page. Getting fit, fabric, and return terms straight before you order turns most of those returns into keepers, and none of it takes more than a minute per listing.
Sizing varies between brands and between lines within one brand, so the only reliable input is the size chart on the listing itself. Measure chest, waist, inseam, or foot length once, keep those numbers somewhere you can find them, and read them against the chart each time. Where a chart gives a range and you fall between sizes, the reviews usually say which way that particular item runs.
Kids' clothing adds a second variable, since age-based labels are approximations. Use the height and weight ranges the chart gives instead, and allow for growth over the season you are buying for.
The fiber breakdown in the product details predicts how a garment wears, drapes, and washes better than any description above it. Natural fibers, synthetics, and blends each behave differently over time, and a percentage of elastane tells you whether a fit will hold. Care instructions matter just as much: an item that needs hand washing or dry cleaning carries an ongoing cost the discount does not cover.
For outerwear and shoes, look for construction detail rather than adjectives. Lining, sole type, and closure hardware are listed in the specifications and are what actually determine how long the item lasts.
Return and exchange policies vary by seller and are sometimes narrower on clearance or final-sale items than on regular stock. The listing and the retailer's returns page state which applies. Read that first when you are ordering a size you are unsure about, because the flexibility to exchange is often worth more than the last few points of discount.
Check who is selling, too. A listing may be sold by the retailer or by a third-party seller, and the seller name shown on the page determines whose return policy governs the order.
Retailers mark down seasonal apparel as they clear space for incoming inventory, so the end of a season is a reliable window for coats, swimwear, and anything else tied to weather. Buying a season ahead works well for staples in sizes that will still fit. It works less well for children, and for anything whose fit you have not confirmed in person.
Basics are the safest thing to buy this way. Socks, underwear, plain tees, and anything you already own in a known size carry almost none of the fit risk that makes discounted clothing a gamble, so they are worth stocking when the markdown arrives.
